Did you know that Windermere Valley motorists used to drive on the left?

When British Columbia became a province in 1871, it followed the English tradition of “left hand traffic”. In January 1913, the Windermere Board of Trade passed a resolution asking the Provincial Government to change this “Turn to the Left” rule to “Turn to the Right” to be in line with the provinces to the east. The Banff-Windermere Highway was being constructed at the time, and the Board was worried that there would be confusion as cars came over the mountains from the right hand drive prairies to the left hand drive BC roads.

The Board’s request was ahead of its time. The Left Hand Drive rule in British Columbia wasn’t changed until 1921 (1922 in Vancouver). It was just in time - the first motor road over the mountains from Alberta, the Banff-Windermere Highway, was officially opened in 1923.
